About Us
Music Motive originated after director/owner, Steve Hilstein sold The Drum Circuit drum shop of San Luis Obispo in 2007, so he could focus on developing music education throughout the Central Coast, CA.
Steve kept the drum instruction part of that business known as Drum School 101—a drum lesson program, first developed in 1981. This well-established program, and many of its original teachers, has since been integrated into a larger, more ambitious program: MUSIC MOTIVE.
OUR PROGRAM
Today, we offer private lessons for just about every musical instrument! Our local, Certified Instructors teach a consistent quality, unmatched in SLO County. We also host Music Enrichment Classes at many local schools for Guitar, Drums, Ukulele, and a Glee Club!.
Other happenings, like special workshops or Percussion Break (a weekly drum circle), are featured continually. All of our programs are specifically designed to give our students an opportunity to stretch, learn, and be inspired.
Our scholarship program provides routes for young, aspiring musicians to learn in our program, regardless of family income level. Music Motive's famous Bucket Busters, whose energetic performances thrill crowds all over the Central Coast, raise scholarship funds from donations they receive—including sales of their CD, "Buckets Of Fire".
Scholarships are also partially funded by private donations from individuals and organizations.
Our Mission:
To provide music instruction through private lessons, workshops, and performance groups. To draw excellence from every student and every teacher.
From the Founder/Director
A good teacher can potentially launch your music career. They might introduce you to a lifetime of playing an instrument, or possibly give you the opportunity to play music for the very first time! I'm confident that our program and facilities will help you get the most out of your musical experience.
I believe that music is an essential part of our lives. It can help you to express your thoughts and feelings, but it’s also been proven that learning to play a musical instrument helps develop thought processes and brain development. It can make you smarter, reduce stress, and help you to feel better about yourself.
It is my life’s work and sincere honor to share the experience of music and I personally invite you to be a part of it. Together we can keep music alive and vibrant! Will you do your part?
Playing music may be the greatest thing to ever happen in a person's life. It could be the best investment you will ever make.
-Steve Hilstein, Director
